How to Get Through Airport Security Quickly

We all know going through airport security is a drag – long lines, lack of privacy, too many rules and regulations to keep up with and of course the dreaded random searches. In order to make this experience less of a nightmare, it helps to be prepared. We’ll give you the best tips on how to pack in order to get through security quickly as well as a few strategies to make the TSA checkpoint a breeze.

Sign Up for TSA PreCheck

If you are a frequent flyer and considered “low-risk”you may have an opportunity to sign up for TSA PreCheck and experience faster security lines without the removal of your belt, shoes or jacket or having to take out your laptop and 3-1-1 compliant bag. To be eligible, you’ll most likely receive an invitation from an airline you fly often or from a Trusted Traveler program like Global Entry or NEXUS. Keep in mind that TSA PreCheck is only available at a handful of airports but is expanding to many other airports due to its popularity. So far, it’s available at 115 airports nationwide. The unfortunate news is that you’ll have to give up some privacy by completing a pre-screening process when you sign up and the speedy lines aren’t necessarily guaranteed.

Arrive Early

This may be obvious, but you never know how long the lines will be or how long they’ll take, so save yourself the stress and get to the airport early especially if you need to first check baggage.

Pack Efficiently

Packing organizers

If you need help organizing your belongings, packing organizers can clear the clutter, help to compress bulky items or make it easy to find small accessories in your suitcase, especially if it does not have any interior pockets or compartments.

First of all, before you even get to the airport, make sure you pack efficiently. Carrying more than you need or having your items disorganized can not only make it difficult to find what you need quickly, it can make screening your bag difficult for security personnel to read which in turn could mean they’ll have to open your bag. Minimize the amount of items your bring, then neatly fold and stack your clothing. Put all bulky items like shoes, books and documents across the top of your clothing and spread if evenly instead of stacking. If you bring a bag to check, this is where you’ll want to pack all your liquids, aerosols and gels as well as large coats and bulkier items.

Going through security with a laptop means you’ll have to pull it out and put it through screening. Make sure your laptop is easily accessible, whether it’s in a front pocket of your suitcase or in a zippered compartment of your briefcase, have it out in time.

Checkpoint Friendly briefcase styles

If you travel often for business, consider a briefcase with a “checkpoint friendly” compartment. This will allow you to slide the entire briefcase through screening without removing your laptop as long as the compartment offers a clear view.

If you are bringing gifts with you, do not wrap them. Otherwise, you may have to unwrap them during the screening process if a security officer needs to inspect it. The best way to avoid this problem and not have an over-packed suitcase, is to ship your gifts to your destination before you travel.

Follow the Rules

Chances are if you’ve been to an airport within the past 13 years, you are already very aware of what to bring and what not to bring to the airport. But, in case you need a refresher here’s a list of prohibited items.

Reading the signs at the beginning of the security line should let you know exactly what you’ll need to have ready. However, in case you aren’t aware of the process, you’ll need to have a form of identification and boarding pass in your hand to show to a security officer. Put these items in a front pocket or your personal carry-on bag so that you can easily get to them and put them away quickly. If you are not able to provide your ID and boarding pass you will have to undergo additional screening.

If you plan on carrying on, make sure you follow the 3-1-1 rule. For your toiletries, have one clear quart-sized, plastic, zip-top bag ready with only 3.4 oz (or less) liquids, gels or aerosols. Put this in the front outside pocket of your suitcase, briefcase or tote so it is easily accessible when the time comes.

Dress appropriately

Avoid wearing clothing with an excessive amount of metal parts or you may have to go through additional screening if you set off the metal detector. This also means that you will have to remove all items from your pockets/clothing including cell phone, money, keys, jewelry, wallet and belt and either place these items ahead of time in front pocket of your carry-on bag or in a bin to go through screening.

Since you will have to remove your shoes through the screening process, try to bring slip-on shoes if you have them.

Get the App

The TSA has a very useful app you can download to your smart phone which will show you what items are prohibited or not, security wait times posted from other passengers, informational videos and more.

The Lowdown on RFID

What is RFID?

Radio Frequency Identification refers to an electromagnetic micro chip that stores data and can be tracked by an RFID reader. It has been used for contact-less payment, access management, tracking goods, luggage, animals and even people.

The use of RFID technology is becoming quite widespread with the cost of implanting this chip going down. You’ll now find RFID technology embedded on many passports, credit cards, boarding passes, transportation payment cards, driver’s licenses and other ID cards. This chip holds the personal data found on these cards so that one can simply wave their card near an RFID scanner instead of having to swipe the magnetic strip on their card or hand their passport over to be read. It can even be read through clothing, wallets, bags, even cars.

The Downside

With the convenience of this technology comes a major threat to individual privacy. RFID chips that hold your personal/financial information from your credit cards and passports can easily be stolen by identity theft criminals with their own RFID readers. It’s rather simple for them to store the reader in a briefcase or bag, walk into a crowd and easily obtain multiple people’s information without physically taking their cards.

How to guard against identify theft

By checking out the wide selection of excellent RFID blocking products we carry at AtlantaLuggage.com.

We have wallets, boarding pass holders, passport cases, and all sorts of travel bags with RFID blocking materials inserted in them to make your next trip to the airport, train station, or store a secure one. Consider Stewart Stand stainless steel wallets, any of which can block RFID signals. For excellent briefcases that offer RFID blocking pockets, the new Briggs & Riley @Work collection is a great choice. And for overall anti-theft properties your best bet is to take a look at the new Pacsafe GII travel bags.

  1. Grand Trunk Parasheet - Single

    Grand Trunk Parasheet – Single

Parasheet – Single by Grand Trunk

The Parasheet is perfect for a day at the beach, a picnic in the park or outdoor music festivals. The reason why it’s better than a towel or a quilt has to do with its super durable, machine-washable, parachute nylon construction that air dries quickly, is mildew resistant and immediately sheds dirt and sand instead of trapping it.  The Parasheet comes in fun bright colors and is simple to tote as it weighs very little and fits in a small stuff sack. Despite its light weight, the Parasheet won’t fly away on you because it has corner sand pockets and stake down loops to hold it in place.

  1. Go Travel Aqua Fan

The Handy-Dandy Checklist of Travel Accessories

While our main goal is to provide our customers with luggage and leather goods that suit their needs at a great price, we understand that not everyone is looking for a new bag when they walk in our store. Many of our customers head straight for the travel accessories, looking for a new gadget to make their life easier. Because we have such a large selection of travel accessories to choose from, first, I thought I’d summarize just what those accessories are and give you a list of the sorts of accessories that are going to come in handy for most anyone – we’ll call it the Handy-Dandy Checklist of Travel Accessories.

The second thing I’d like to do is start an informational series on travel accessories to give you the lowdown on which items on the checklist are the best or just extra cool, what TSA Approved really means, what to look for in a luggage lock, what RFID blocking technology is and why you might need it – that kind of stuff. So if that sounds interesting be sure to stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for more.

Now for the Handy-Dandy Checklist of Travel Accessories

1. Luggage Accessories

Because not every suitcase comes with helpful gadgets such as:

2. Packing Accessories

Maybe you’re an excellent packer (because you learned how to pack efficiently) and don’t need any help in this department. Good for you. For the rest of us here’s some helpful items:

3. Toiletry Items

Travelo Refillable Fragrance Atomizer

Always necessary for basic hygiene but in a fun travel size.

4. Travel Comfort Items

Makes for less cranky and more cozy travelers.

Go Travel Pillow Duo

Go Travel Pillow Duo – Converts from neck rest to pillow – pretty awesome.

  • Pillows, neck rests, and blankets – because the best way to get a neck cramp and no sleep on an 8 hour flight is to go without one of these. By far one of the most popular travel accessories. I recommend: The Cabeau Travel Evolution Pillow – best-selling, super comfy memory foam offers the most support.
  • Sleep masks and ear plugs – for those who need their beauty rest. I recommend: Austin House Sleep Eze Eye Shade – inexpensive, super soft, comes with a set of ear plugs.
  • Compression Socks – stimulates circulation to reduce swelling for long periods of sitting. Not just for old folks. I recommend: Zensah Compression Leg Sleeves - the Zensah fabric regulates temperature and fights bacteria while provide pin-point compression to the front and back of the leg.
  • Motion relief wrist bands - If you’re one of those people that gets sick while traveling, these come in handy and are drug-free. They work by applying gentle pressure to an acupuncture point on wrist. I recommend: Go Travel Acustraps.

5. Travel Security Items

Go Travel Clip Pouch

Go Travel Clip Pouch

Not for everyone, but definitely handy for less-than-safe countries, sketchy hotels and crowded places.

  • Undercover money holders – money belts, leg pouches, neck holders, clip safes. I recommend: Eagle Creek Undercover Money Belt DLX - extra large, soft and adjustable, moisture-wicking mesh back panel, two zippered pockets to store your passport, currency, and itineraries.
  • Alarms – and pepper spray to protect yourself and your room. I recommend: Cutting Edge Personal Door Alarm with Light – not just a door alarm, can be stored and used in a purse/travel bag, a pocket or a belt loop as well as on a window or laptop.
  • RFID blocking products – wallets, wallet and passport inserts, boarding pass holders. I recommend: The Travelon Safe ID Large Credit Card Wallet – great for everyday use, holds up to 9 credit cards, has a zippered compartment, and of course blocks RFID.
  • Anti-theft bags – not travel accessories but worth mentioning in terms of security. I recommend: Pacsafe Metrosafe 200 GII Anti-Theft Shoulder Bag – lots of great features including a RFID blocking pocket, a padded electronic pocket, fits an iPad, has side pockets for a water bottle or umbrella, and headphone port among the usual great anti-theft features that Pacsafe includes in all their bags.

6. Travel Electronics

Conair Travel Smart Mini Travel Iron

Conair Travel Smart Mini Travel Iron

Okay, the truth here is that you don’t really need these items except for specific situations. For international travelers and folks staying in less than adequate housing these items may be very handy.

  • Electrical adapters – for those international travelers. Here’s another handy-dandy guide to electrical adapters.
  • Travel appliances – irons, hair curlers, hair dryers, water heaters, etc. Choose wisely as these items can add weight to your bag although they are all in small travel sizes so not too much weight.

So that’s it. I summed up the type of travel accessories we carry and gave you recommendations on some of the best ones. Use this checklist as a general guide when planning a trip. Consider the state of your luggage – does it need to be accessorized in order to not fall apart or go missing mid-trip? Consider your packing skills – could you use some help organizing and squeezing a bit more in? Perhaps that extra long trip in the future could use a bit more comfort – check out our travel comfort items. You get the idea. If you don’t, I suggest you head on over to our store in Atlanta or browse our website to find a wide variety of stuff you never knew you needed.

The Best Luggage Protection

Buying luggage can be quite an investment for many so it can be heartbreaking and extremely frustrating to find that your brand new or not-so-new but lovingly used suitcase has been damaged while it has been out of your hands (or in your hands). As a luggage repair center, we’ve seen just the sort of damage that rough handling and constant use can do to luggage – broken pull handles, missing zippers, handles, and wheels as well as giant tears, scrapes, and even grease stains and shattered frames. We’ve seen it all and that’s why we recommend a permanent and inexpensive solution to this problem:

Coverlugg Travel Stamps Cover

Coverlugg Travel Stamps Cover

Try a luggage cover!

Luggage covers work well to ensure that your suitcase looks just as new as the day you bought it. They protect against every day damage such as scrapes, grease stains, scratches, scuffs, accidental openings and spills as well as waterproofing your suitcase so you don’t have to worry about rain or snow leaking into your bag. When you’re not using your suitcase, luggage covers will also keep it in mint condition while in storage.

We offer two brands of luggage covers – LuggageProtect and Coverlugg, both of which work very well to protect the average upright suitcase. The main difference between the two brands are the material they’re made out of – neoprene vs vinyl.

Coverlugg Pink Polka Dots Cover

Coverlugg Pink Polka Dots Cover

Coverlugg offers neoprene covers in a variety of colors and patterns so they also serve to help you identify your luggage. Coverlugg offers two sizes – a 20″ and a 30″ size which effectively cover most suitcases because the neoprene material stretches. It’s also handwashable and waterproof as well as TSA compliant and very lightweight. The downside to these covers would be that they do not cover the top or bottom of your suitcase and they only offer two sizes. The great thing about Coverlugg covers are the choices available – polka dots, travel stamps, animal prints, solid colors, sports logos and more. They give an ordinary black suitcase some personality while protecting it at the same time.

Luggage Protect Luggage Cover

Luggage Protect Luggage Cover

Our best-selling brand is LuggageProtect which offers durable 12 gauge clear vinyl covers sized to fit 22″, 25″, 27″ and 29″ suitcases as well as 23″ garment bags. While the sizes may be clear cut it’s also easy to fit inbetween sizes as well because LuggageProtect covers are fastened by a long strip of velcro that can be adjusted to fit your bag. The great thing about these covers are that they cover most of the top and bottom of your bag as well as the sides and they are see-through so you can still identify your bag. They also pass through airport security without issues but if you need to take it off it’s as simple as unfastening the velcro and sliding it right off.

Luggage covers, whether neoprene or vinyl, do a great job of prolonging the life of your luggage, so considering buying one today at AtlantaLuggage.com! We offer low prices and fast shipping (shipping is free if your purchase is $100 or over). If you have any questions about sizing, durability, or would like to place an order please give us a call at 1-800-720-2928 and we’d be glad to help you choose the right cover your luggage.
